Online Benchmarking Activity
Stage 1 English as an Additional Language – Sample 2

Benchmarking your assessment decisions involves:

  1. Reading the performance standards and viewing a set of student work
  2. Making an assessment decision (with colleagues or independently)
  3. Comparing and benchmarking your assessment decision with the statewide decision

Before you commence the 3 activities, please provide the name of your school.

As a guide, view the student work to build an initial interpretation. Identify where each specific feature lies to confirm the grade. Step back to consider the evidence and specific features as a whole to make a final decision.

Tips:

  • Scan the student folios as a whole and then focus on evidence in specific tasks. It is neither expected, nor necessary, for you to read and mark every piece of work in the benchmark sample.
  • Avoid distracters and evidence that is not relevant to the performance standards (e.g. effort, untidy work).
  • If the respective weightings of the assessment types differ significantly (> 20%),focus on the evidence in the assessment type with the greatest weighting first
  • Keep track of time; 20 - 30 minutes should be sufficient to scan the sample, make a decision and reflect on the statewide benchmark decision. Monitor the time used to complete the activity if you find that it is taking longer than 30 minutes please note that benchmarking does not require you to read in detail and mark the pieces of work presented.
